All Ways To Obtain Thermal Optics In Escape From Tarkov

Thermal optics are an end-game item in Escape From Tarkov that allow you to identify targets at range based on their heat signature. This gives you a formidable advantage in engagements often allowing you to kill targets before they even see you and makes it one of the most powerful items in the game. To balance their effectiveness the developers have made it very difficult or extremely expensive to obtain thermal optics. Currently, thermal optics are not included in the loot tables for any container in the game. This guide will go over every way to obtain thermal optics and compares which is the most cost effective method in Escape From Tarkov as of update 12.9.

Purchase, Barter Or Craft Your Thermals

Thermal optics can be crafted in your hideout, acquired from the traders through barter trades or purchased on the Flea Market. Below is a list of all of the available trades or crafts to acquire thermals in the game. The cost refers to the current Flea Market price (updated daily) of all of the components combined. There may be opportunities to acquire the components for less using other barter trades or crafts, but will vary based on market fluctuations. The helmet mounted T-7 thermal goggles can only be purchased from Jaeger LL4 and is included in the table below.

Quest Rewards

Traders In Escape From Tarkov

There are three quests in the game that offer thermal riflescopes as a reward for completing them. The Mechanic will reward players that complete the Import quest with a Trijicon REAP-IR thermal riflescope. Jaeger will also award players with a Trijicon REAP-IR thermal riflescope if they complete his quest, Huntsman Path – Eraser – Part 2, to kill 6 raiders. Lastly, the Mechanic awards players that complete the Gunsmith – Part 16 quest with an M4A1 with a REAP-IR attached. However, this quest requires you to build an M4A1 with a REAP-IR so he’s essentially just giving it back to you.

It should be noted that Prapor will give you a modded Springfield M1A rifle with a REAP-IR thermal riflescope for his Test Drive quest. You need to kill 5 PMCs with this weapon or a similarly modded M1A including a REAP-IR. Should you complete the quest without losing the weapon, then it is yours to keep.

KIBA Arms International Store | Interchange Map

The Interchange Map currently has the only known spawn for thermal riflescopes in Escape From Tarkov. Located on the first floor of the mall is the KIBA Arms International Store. This location requires the power to be turned on and the use of two keys – Key to KIBA store outlet and Key to KIBA Outlet grate door – for players to gain entry inside. Modded weapons have a chance to spawn along the walls inside the store. There is a chance that a modded weapon can spawn with a thermal riflescope attached. We have only confirmed reports of these weapons spawning with REAP-IR scopes; however, there are unconfirmed reports of FLIR RS-32 optics spawning as well. You can learn more about finding thermals at this location in our article here.

Player Scav Initial Equipment

Player Scav With FLIR

There is an extremely rare chance that your player scav can spawn with a thermal optic attached to their weapon. It will be the FLIR RS-32 mounted to a SV-98. We have not heard of any spawns with other weapon builds including thermals, but will update this article if we come across any.

Loot From Dead Players

This one is a given, but we would hear about it if we did not include it. Of course, you can acquire thermal optics if you manage to kill another player using them. Or get very lucky coming across a dead player that has not been looted yet with a thermal optic on his gun. If you are really lucky, then you may even find a thermal optic hidden in a bush that a player has tried to hide. Because thermal optics cannot be carried in a secure container players will often try to hide their optics on the map and rely on getting it back through insurance if they do not think they will survive the raid.

Thermal Riflescopes

Trijicon REAP-IR thermal riflescope

The Trijicon REAP-IR thermal riflescope is a weapon mounted thermal optic. It has a 2.5x zoom with either white on black or black on white heat signature settings which makes finding targets at range very easy. This gives you a formidable advantage in engagements often allowing you to kill targets before they even see you and makes it one of the most powerful items in Escape From Tarkov.

FLIR RS-32 2.25-9x 35mm 60Hz thermal riflescope

The FLIR RS-32 2.25-9x 35mm 60Hz thermal riflescope is a weapon mounted thermal optic unit. Unlike the REAP-IR, the FLIR RS-32 has two zoom options – 2.25x and 9x magnifications – allowing greater flexibility at range. The sight only has a single mode that displays targets in bright red over a white background. The thermal effectiveness of the FLIR RS-32 is lacking compared to the REAP-IR. Some soft cover objects such as light bushes can obscure the thermal picture of the FLIR RS-32. However, it still provides a significant advantage in identifying and engaging distances – especially when used at night.

T-7 Thermal Goggles with Night Vision Mounts

The T-7 Thermal Goggles with Night Vision Mounts is the only helmet mounted thermal optic unit in the game. It provides the clearest thermal picture out of all the thermal optic units. It is also the most expensive thermal unit by far and the most expensive equipment item in the game. The T-7 cannot be found in raid except off a dead player using one.

Thermal Required Quests

Gunsmith – Part 16

The very last quest in the Mechanic‘s Gunsmith quest line. You are required to build a Colt M4A1 5.56×45 Assault Rifle with:

  • Over 48 ergonomics
  • Under 250 combined recoil
  • Weigh less than 5 kg
  • Have a 60 round extended magazine
  • KAC QDSS NT-4 FDE 5.56×45 silencer
  • Handguard MK 10 for use with AR-15 and compatible
  • Trijicon REAP-IR thermal riflescope

Coincidentally, the reward for completing this quest includes a M4A1 with a Trijicon REAP-IR on it so you will get back the REAP-IR that you used to complete this quest.

Test Drive

Prapor offers this quest that requires you to get 5 PMC kills using a Springfield Armory M1A 7.62×51 with a Hybrid 46 silencer and a REAP-IR thermal riflescope. When you accept this quest he will give you a M1A rifle set to these requirements including the REAP-IR thermal.
